Phytohormones are molecules responsible for growth, development, and metabolism regulation in plants. Gibberellic acid (GA3) and abscisic acid (ABA) are the main phytohormones involved in seed germination. Notably, it should be a highlight that GA3 induces germination, whereas ABA inhibits it. For this reason, it is important to calculate the concentration of these two phytohormones during seeds germination. Firstly, the maize seeds (MS) were germinated and samples of these were taken at different imbibition times, after that, methanol extracts were obtained using two methods of dynamic solvent extraction assisted by sonication (DSASE) and a traditional extraction method (maceration); finally, to estimate the concentration of GA3 and ABA a high performance liquid chromatographic method was used. The results of this study showed that the three extraction methods used, allowed quantifying GA3 and ABA during the maize germination time studied. However, of the two extraction methods employed, DSASE was the best technique because higher concentrations of GA3 and ABA were found. Therefore, it is important to continue using this green chemistry methodology for these and other analyses.•The extraction protocol developed was based on dynamic sonication-assisted solvent extraction.•The chromatographic method used allowed the simultaneous determination of two phytohormones with different physicochemical properties in maize seeds.•This methodology offers good sensitivity, linearity, precision, reproducibility and suitable detection and quantification limits.

Introducción: El bienestar de los niños depende de un cuidado integral. Es la madre junto a la familia quienes desempeñan un rol importante en el cuidado integral de sus hijos, por lo que el tiempo que le dedican es fundamental. Objetivo: Identificar los efectos del tiempo de cuidado familiar en la carga de trabajo doméstico sobre la salud del niño. Métodos: Estudio cuantitativo, observacional, transversal con diseño ex post facto, realizado en Acomayo, Distrito Chinchao, Provincia Huánuco, Perú, durante enero-diciembre del 2019. Población de 180 madres, muestra de 54 sujetos seleccionados con muestreo aleatorio simple. Se aplicaron: cuestionario de características generales de la madre, ficha de evaluación del estado nutricional del niño, ficha de tamizaje de hemoglobina y ficha de análisis documental de los episodios de enfermedades de los niños, validados y fiabilizados. Se utilizaron frecuencias absolutas y porcentajes, las hipótesis se comprobaron mediante la prueba chi cuadrado para p 0,05. Resultados: Del total de la muestra, 55,55 por ciento disponía de tiempo insuficiente para el cuidado familiar, 42,59 por ciento tenía un tiempo ajustado. Hubo desnutrición aguda en 48,14 por ciento y anemia leve en 46,29 por ciento. Se identificó presencia de al menos un episodio de enfermedad diarreica aguda en 37,03 por ciento, infección respiratoria aguda en 38,88 por ciento y parasitosis en 35,18 por ciento. Conclusiones: El tiempo insuficiente para el cuidado familiar en las cargas de trabajo doméstico tiene efectos desfavorables en la salud infantil, evidenciado con la presencia de desnutrición aguda, anemia, enfermedades diarreicas agudas, infecciones respiratorias agudas. y parasitosis en los niños estudiados (p ≤ 0,05)(AU)


Introduction: The well-being of children depends on comprehensive care. It is the mother, together with the family, who plays an important role in the comprehensive care of their children; therefore, the time they dedicate to such task is essential. Objective: To identify the effects of family care time within domestic workloads on child health. Methods: Quantitative, observational and cross-sectional study, with ex post facto design, carried out, from January to December 2019, in Acomayo, Chinchao District, Huánuco Province, Peru. The population was 180 mothers, while the sample was 54 subjects chosen with simple random sampling. The following instruments, validated and made reliable, were applied: a questionnaire on the mother's general characteristics, an assessing card for the child's nutritional status, a hemoglobin screening card, document analysis card for the children's illness episodes. Absolute frequencies and percentages were used < the hypotheses were verified using the chi-square test for P ≤ 0.05. Results: Of the whole sample, 55.55 percent had insufficient time for family care, while 42.59 percent had an adjusted time. There was acute malnutrition in 48.14 percent and mild anemia in 46.29 percent. The presence of at least one episode of acute diarrheal disease was identified in 37.03 percent; for acute respiratory infection, in 38.88 percent; and for parasitosis, in 35.18 percent. Conclusions: Insufficient family care time within the domestic workloads has unfavorable effects on child health, evidenced by the presence of acute malnutrition, anemia, acute diarrheal diseases, acute respiratory infections and parasitosis in the children studied (P ≤ 0.05)(AU)

Maggots from the Lucilia sp. genus are used for debridement of infected and necrotic wounds. Broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity has been described in the excretion/secretions (ES1) of these larvae. This study identifies the genetic sequence of a cecropin-like antimicrobial peptide from Lucilia eximia. Total RNA was extracted and used for PCR-RACE amplification of a cecropin, the native peptide was immunolocalized in the tissues and secretions of the larvae, and a synthetic analog was used to explore its antimicrobial, cytotoxic, LPS neutralizing and wound-healing activities in vitro. The genetic cDNA sequence of a cecropin-like antimicrobial peptide in L. eximia called "Lucilin" was amplified, corresponding to 63 aa completed protein and 40 aa mature peptide; the structure of the mature peptide was predicted as an α-helix. The peptide was immunolocalized in the salivary glands, fat body, the ES, and hemolymph of the maggots. Lucilin synthetic peptide analog was active against E. coli DH10B with a MIC2 of 7.8 µg/mL, E. coli extended spectrum b-lactamase (ESBL) (MIC: 15.6 µg/mL), and Enterobacter cloacae (MIC: 125 µg/mL), but it was not active against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus epidermidis; and had no cytotoxic or hemolytic activity. It showed immunomodulatory activity against human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) stimulated with LPS, reducing the TNF-α production when treated at 17 µg/mL and induces cell migration of Hacat at 5 and 50 µg/mL. Lucilin is a cecropin-like peptide from L. eximia with antimicrobial activity against Gram negative bacteria and immunomodulatory activities, decreasing the TNF-α production in PBMCs and inducing cellular migration in human keratinocytes.

Resumen El maíz (Zea mays L.) es el segundo cereal de mayor cultivo a nivel mundial el cual es empleado como materia prima en diferentes industrias. Hasta el momento no se han encontrado reportes de la obtención del ácido giberélico (GA3) en esta planta. En el presente trabajo se compararon los métodos de extracción sólido-líquido por lixiviación y la extracción dinámica con disolvente asistida por sonicación (DSASE) para la obtención del GA3 a partir de semillas germinadas de maíz. Los factores trabajados en la extracción por lixiviación fueron el método físico, el solvente y el tiempo, mientras que los parámetros por DSASE fueron el flujo, el solvente y el tiempo. La mayor concentración del GA3 se obtuvo con el método DSASE (30,012 mg/kg), empleando como solvente acetonitrilo-ácido fórmico 5% (80;20, v:v) a un flujo de 0,4 mL/min y un tiempo de extracción de 25,0 min. La identificación y la cuantificación del GA3 se realizó mediante cromatografía líquida de alta eficiencia (HPLC) con detector de arreglo de diodos (DAD). Estos resultados evidenciaron que la DSASE es una alternativa novedosa para la obtención del GA3, dada su alta eficiencia, el bajo consumo de solvente y su simplicidad en la obtención del extracto.


Abstract Corn (Zea mays L.) is the second most cultivated cereal in the world and is used as raw material for different kind of industries. To date no reports about obtaining giberellic acid (GA3) from corn have been found. In the present study two methods for extracting solid samples were evaluated; lixiviation and dynamic sonication-assisted solvent extraction (DSASE), for obtaining giberellic acid from corn germinated seeds. In lixiviation, the physical method (agitation and sonication), solvent, and time were the parameters analyzed; while in DSASE the variables were; solvent, flow, and time. The most efficient technique was DSASE employing acetonitrile-formic acid 5% (80;20, v:v) as solvent at a flow of 0,4 mL/ min for 25,0 min, obtaining a concentration of 30,012 mg/kg giberellic acid. Identification and quantification were performed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with diode array detector (DAD). These results showed that dynamic sonication-assisted solvent extraction (DSASE) is a novel and powerful alternative technique for obtaining giberellic acid, because of its high efficiency; low solvent consumption and simplicity in obtaining the extract.


Resumo O milho (Zea mays L.) é o segundo cereal mais cultivado no mundo e é usado como matéria-prima em diferentes indústrias. Até a data não foram encontrados estudos da obtenção do ácido giberélico (GA3) neste cereal. Este trabalho teve como objetivo a comparação da metodologia de extração sólido-líquido por lixiviação e a metodologia de extração dinâmica com dissolvente assistida por sonicação (DSASE) para a obtenção do ácido giberélico a partir de sementes germinadas de milho (Zea mays L.). Na extração por lixiviação foram avaliados diferentes parâmetros; o método físico, o solvente e o tempo; e na metodologia DSASE estes parâmetros foram; o solvente, o fluxo e o tempo. A maior concentração de ácido giberélico (GA3) foi obtida com a metodologia DSASE, usando como solvente acetonitrila-ácido fórmico 5% v/v (80;20), fluxo de 0,4 mL/min e tempo de extração de 25,0 min. A identificação e a quantificação do GA3 foi realizada mediante cromatografia líquida de alta eficiência (HPLC) com detecção de arreglo de diodos (DAD). Os resultados evidenciaram que a DSASE foi uma excelente alternativa para a obtenção do ácido giberélico, por apresentar alta eficiência, pouco consumo de solvente e ser umatécnica simples para a obtenção do extrato.

La falla hepática aguda sobre crónica (ACLF, del inglés Acuteon Chronic Liver Failure) comprende el deterioro agudo de la función hepática en un paciente que tiene de base una enfermedad hepática crónica de novo o conocida y desencadenada por diferentes factores precipitantes que pueden ser hepáticos o extrahepáticos. Dentro de las manifestaciones clínicas se encuentran: disfunción renal, encefalopatía hepática y falla orgánica multisistémica, que de no ser tratadas oportunamente se traducen en mal pronóstico. Se han utilizado varias puntuaciones para valorar la función hepática y el pronóstico de los pacientes. A pesar de que la falla orgánica multisistémica es una contraindicación para el trasplante hepático, este sigue siendo la mejor opción de tratamiento para estos pacientes


Acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) includes acute deterioration of liver functions in patients with either chronic de novo liver disease or already diagnosed liver disease. ACLF can be triggered by various hepatic or extrahepatic precipitating factors. Among its clinical manifestations are renal dysfunction, hepatic encephalopathy, and multisystem organ failure. If not treated promptly translate the prognosis can be poor. Several scoring systems have been used to assess liver function and patient prognosis. Although multisystem organ failure contraindicates liver transplantation, it remains the treatment of choice for this patients

Avances en la terapia inmunosupresora han revolucionado los resultados a largo plazo del trasplante de hígado, sin embargo esto ha incrementado la prevalencia de enfermedad renal crónica (ERC); existen algunos factores de riesgo asociados como el uso de inhibidores de calcineurínicos, la presencia de diabetes e hipertensión. El objetivo de este estudio es determinar la incidencia de ERC en los pacientes trasplantados de hígado del hospital Pablo Tobón Uribe durante los años 2005-2013 y evaluar las complicaciones asociadas. Metodología: cohorte retrospectiva. Resultados: se evaluaron 215 pacientes trasplantados de hígado, la edad mediana fue de 50,37 años (DE ± 12,6), el 42,8% mujeres; 3,3% de los pacientes necesitaron terapia de reemplazo renal al primer mes del trasplante; la terapia inmunosupresora más utilizada fue ciclosporina en el 90,7%. Durante el seguimiento la tasa de filtración disminuye con el tiempo, con una mediana de 86,2 mL/min/1,73 (DE ± 25,9) al momento del trasplante y llegando a 74,2 mL/min/1,73 (DE ± 24,5) a 3 años de seguimiento. La velocidad de deterioro de la función renal por medio del modelo de ecuaciones generalizadas estimadas fue de 3,5 mL/año (IC: 95% 2,44-4,74, p= 0,000). Al momento del trasplante de hígado el 16,3% de los pacientes presentaban una TFG menor a 60 mL/min; a tres años de seguimiento fue de 29,6%; al agrupar las complicaciones encontradas, según presencia o no de disfunción renal al final del seguimiento, encontramos que a excepción de la muerte, la presencia de enfermedad cerebrovascular y enfermedad coronaria fue similar en ambos grupos. Conclusión: la ERC es una complicación frecuente en los pacientes trasplantados de hígado, nuestra recomendación es el control frecuente de los marcadores de daño renal.


Advances in immunosuppressive therapy have revolutionized long-term results of liver transplantation, but this has increased the prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Some risk factors including diabetes and hypertension are associated with the use of calcineurin inhibitors. The objective of this study is to determine the incidence of CKD in liver transplant patients at the Hospital Pablo Tobon Uribe from 2005 to 2013 and then assess associated complications. Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study. Results: This study evaluated 215 patients with liver transplants. Average patient age at transplant was 50.37 years (SD +/- 12.6), and 42.8% of the patients were women. Kidney replacements were required by 3.3% of the patients within the first month after liver transplantation. The most frequently used immunosuppressive therapy was cyclosporine which was used for 90.7% of the patients. During follow-up, the filtration rate decreased over time with a median of 86.2ml/min/1.73 (SD +/- 25.9) at transplant. This reached 74.2ml/min/1.73 (SD +/- 24.5) at 3 years follow-up. The rate of deterioration of renal function determined by generalized estimated equations was 3.5ml/year (95% CI 2.44 to 4.74, p = 0.000). At the time of liver transplantation 16.3% of patients had glomerular filtration rates of less than 60ml/min. After three years of follow-up, 29.6% of patients had glomerular filtration rates of less than 60ml/min. By grouping complications such as the presence or absence of renal dysfunction at follow-up, we found that, except for death, the presence of cerebrovascular disease and coronary heart disease was similar in both groups. Conclusion: CKD is a frequent complication in liver transplant patients. Our recommendation is frequent monitoring of kidney damage markers.
